This book was incredible from beginning to end. I blew past my bedtime to finish! It won’t be for everyone though. As noted by the author in a letter at the beginning of the book, it is graphically violent. That shouldn’t come as a surprise when you pick up a book about an assassin but it is worth noting. I found myself pulled along, though, wanting to know more about Nena’s story.

To read the full review visit: http://celebratingauthors.ca/2023/08/09/book-review-for-her-name-is-knight-by-yasawriter-amazonpub/.

_____________________

<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">

This review is simply the personal opinion of Carolyn Arnold. When the victim of a robbery is murdered, Maud needs to bag a killer.

Maud is a lady and comes from money, but she's ambitious and wants to make a life for herself. Sitting around and finding a husband isn't her idea of living a life of purpose. She decides to leave her pampered life behind to open a private investigation firm and takes her former maid, Daisy, with her.

But in their day and age, business and ambition were typically left to men. Due to this, at first it's looking like their new business is going to get off to a rough start, but soon the cases start coming in. Their first client is a duchess hosting a weekend affair, concerned about the jewels of her wealthy guests getting pinched. After all, there have been a spite of robberies in the area recently. But when a guest's diamond necklace is stolen, that's not the only crime that was committed. The owner of the necklace was murdered.

This puts Maud and Daisy in over their heads, but they still manage to keep calm and get the job done. And while there's an arrest, it doesn't settle. There has to be more to what happened, but it's not until Maud and Daisy pick up a couple more cases, that the pieces start to go together.

I found this book to be a good introduction to a new series. The pairing of Maud and her assistant, Daisy, worked well but as the series advances, I'd like to hear more from Daisy. With that said, this book was an enjoyable, light read, and I'm interested to see where the series will go.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.

Buy on Amazon.

_____________________

<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">

Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. It started off like the former with Tracy leaving her husband and taking with her therapist. But then it takes a turn, and another, and another...

On her way home to talk things out with her husband, a car is tailing her. When Tracy takes a back road in an effort to ditch this person, she soon finds out that she failed in doing so. Next thing she knows her car is being pushed in the river. While she manages to get out before it fully goes under, she runs. Her pursuer follows and what happened from there is revealed through several scenes as the book goes on.

In the meantime, there are two police investigations. There is one involving the murder of a lawyer and one Tracy's disappearance. But who exactly was this lawyer and how is her murder at all connected with the story? You'll need to read the book to find out.

I don't want to say too much more to risk giving spoilers, but if you like complicated, layered stories, this is not one to be missed! I highly recommend.

Buy on Amazon.

_____________________

<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">

Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. Hate your job, hate your spouse, hate your family— and most importantly, hate yourself. We were not designed to be miserable , but this world created an assembly line that’s impossible to get off. I help people get off that carousel, or at least I try to. - Excerpt from The Marriage Counselor

OMG! This is one of the best, if not THE BEST, domestic suspense novels I've ever read! From the first chapter, the narrative pulled me in and it wasn't long before things really began moving.

Adele Johansen, a marriage counselor, is following in the shadows of her parents who used to treat couples on a TV show. She lost them when she was thirteen, and they died in a fiery car crash. When an old flame, now police detective, comes knocking at Adele's door she never expected that her life was about to take such drastic turns. He's there to inform her that her husband of seven years is missing, but that's not all. She soon finds out all the secrets the man she was married to was keeping from her. And while she's processing this, the integrity of her parents' work and the details surrounding their crash are also being questioned in the media spotlight. Her business and reputation are taking a huge hit, and she's going to need to rebuild her life.

This book had me flipping the pages! The lies and secrets stack up along with the body count-- and let's not leave out the glorious twists! I don't feel I can say much more without giving away spoilers, but do yourself a favor, read this book. But first, grab yourself a tea and cozy up under a blanket, whatever you can do to calm yourself because this book will have your heart racing!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.

Buy on Amazon.

~~~~
I also had the pleasure of reading Dea Poirier's Find Me in the Dark. When I read the description, I knew that I had to read this book! And it did not disappoint. You've got the daughter of a serial killer working on tracking one down...? With these friends, who needs enemies?
Like with the other books I've read by Gosia Nealon, THE POLISH DAUGHTER just sucked me right in. Once I started, I found it near impossible to set the book down! She's an incredible storyteller and her approach to Word War 2 fiction really humanizes that time in history. Those alive then were just like us today with dreams and hopes, just sadly so many of them were squashed. As I think every time I read this genre, it's heartbreaking to how sadistic man can be too another.
It’s the question we have been asking for the last five years." - Excerpt from The Polish Daughter
For those, like me, who have the previous books in this series, this one has cameo appearances from characters in an earlier installment. If this was done in the other books before this one, I missed it. But it was neat seeing the paths cross between the characters.
Nealon also doesn't shy away from giving a graphic image of the atrocities committed during that time. I think this, too, is what makes her stories so intense.
Full of emotion and resolution. Wanda was an excellent lead character though I also very much enjoyed the chapters from Finn's point of view. The trio of friends all add something to the plot. You have the main character, Alice, who runs a bookshop, Franny who owns the local coffee shop, and Owen who owns the town's bakery. I really love Owen's energy! He is fun and lively! This is not too say that Alice or Franny fall short!
The author did an incredible job at immersing me into the small town, and I really felt like I was experiencing autumn! I could conjure the sights and smells. As for the mystery itself, I found it entertaining and logical.
When the owner of the new yoga studio is murdered, Alice becomes the prime suspect. To clear her name, she and her friends work to unravel the puzzle and find the real killer. Just when they think they have it figured out, they realize they don't, but they are just close enough that it puts one of them in danger.
I can highly recommend this book, and if the rest of the series is this good, it's definitely one lovers of cozy mysteries will want to check out.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. Possibilities beckoned from the shadows, but they were only possibilities. But, of course, what else is there to do to keep busy in a small town? With that said, our main stars have busy lives even when people in Abbeymead aren't being knocked off.
Flora runs a bookstore she inherited from her aunt Violet, and Jack is a crime novelist. The two of them certainly make an excellent pair of curious minds. When the bells of the local church sound in an odd manner, the two of them put off their plans to check out what's going on. They end up stumbling on the scene of a murder--but they are not the only ones. There are others present, but do any of them have motive to want the church's bell-ringer dead?
What follows is a search for the truth as the duo sleuth around the small town and even take to the streets of London trying to solve the mystery. It soon becomes clear that people are keeping secrets, but which one resulted in murder? And will Flora's and Jack's nosiness get them into trouble with the killer?
Buy from Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. She went there after her grandmother's death and being summoned by her estate attorney. She didn't know what to expect but she never anticipated her aunt's hostility at her presence and she certainly never saw herself inheriting her grandmother's estate. But that's not all. Her grandmother had taken in her daughter's girls after the death of their mother. As part of the condition for inheriting, Marianne needs to take them on. She feels hardly equipped to so and with her aunt contesting the will, it would just be easier if Marianne turned around and headed back to the States. Only thing niggling at her conscience though is what her grandmother had wanted for her.
When, shortly after, her life in the city completely falls apart, Marianne figures she might as well give Ireland a real go. The conditions of the will also allow Marianne an out after a year.
What follows once Marianne decides to give it a go is a heartwarming journey of discovery and re-discovery. Though it isn't without its rocky patches. That miserable aunt is determined to make Marianne's life hell for choosing to stay. She starts to feel like a broken record given how many times she tells Marianne to go back to New York City. But will it always be that way? You'll need to read the book.
I greatly enjoyed reading the letters from her grandmother that she wrote when she was sick. All of these were addressed to Marianne, and it's like she reaching out from beyond the grave. It was nice to see Marianne adjust to her new role as an aunt turned mother. It was also touching to see her take control of her life.
The ending is magical and serendipitous. I recommend this read if you just want to get swept away for awhile.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. Beforehand people were going about their lives, some struggling much more than others. Even those more influential such as Julius, one of the main characters, was quick to dismiss Hilter as an actual threat. With that said, we have the benefit of hindsight to know that danger and extreme hardship was coming, especially to Jewish people and any who resisted the new movement.
This story moves along at a good pace and is told through a few people's points of view. You have a wealthy couple, who haven't experienced any financial hardship, though their marriage is growing increasingly distant. They belong to the top echelons of society. This is Edith and Julius, a born jew but baptized Protestant, who owns a bank. Then there's Edith's brother, Joseph, who believes Hilter is the solution to a better Germany. The third perspective belongs to an old classmate of Edith's. Her and her husband have felt the financial impact of an unstable economy. They have two young children to provide for, and he is of Jewish background.
It's so sad to see how blinded people were by Hilter's point of view and outlook. It blows me away that so many just fell in line to blindly follow after him. Just because Hilter said something, it must be true. How sad to think of all the horrendous acts conducted at this time in history under the guise of improving the world. Beyond violent acts, people lost their jobs and their homes. Equally sad is how it pitted family members against each other and tore marriages apart.
I recommend this read for deep thinkers because it does get one thinking--and angry. But, sadly, history has taught us little. Even though Hilter is long dead, prejudice and hate crimes still exist and those seen as "different" are persecuted and outcast. This can be for any reason, no matter how slight. It may be due to a person's background, lifestyle, religion, appearance... Essentially anything that makes a person uncomfortable has the potential to wreck havoc. Honestly, in the present day, there is much more prejudice and stereotyping than most want to admit.
I also saw the reflection of history repeating itself with the recent pandemic. While it wasn't stereotyping, people back then tamped down Hitler's impact at the beginning, refusing to see what was coming even when it was right in front of their faces. With Covid-19, the warning signs were there and ignored or dismissed as being of little consequence. As a whole, humankind tends to downplay our instincts. Where would the world be if more of us listened to our voice inside and followed reason? Then who is to say what is right and wrong? But what if we decided to stand in our own power, thinking for ourselves rather than blindly following the masses?
The above line of thoughts are only only two I'm sharing. This book would be an excellent choice for a book club. I can only imagine the colorful and lively discussions. While this book didn't have a neat and tidy ending, we know from the history books where it was heading, and still recommend.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
Book blurb:
Germany, 1930s: Edith holds the letter in a trembling hand, her eyes fixed on the eagle carrying the terrifying symbol in its claws. Over Americano! This book is the first in a new series.
Here’s the
overview:
Sara Cain
isn't your typical thirty-two-year-old woman. Murder detective by day, writer
and… sleuth by night? Just as long as there’s enough coffee to keep her going…
When her first
novel gives her trouble, Sara goes for a walk to clear her writer’s block
and ends up stumbling right into a real-life murder mystery. Magnum, an
adventurous beagle, comes running off leash toward her in the local park,
and she returns him home only to find his master dead on the entry floor.
Cliff Cunningham
was a championship bowler with a mean streak and a temper, and police are
pegging his Golden Pin bowling trophy as the murder weapon. While any number of
people could have clocked a strike by knocking him on the noggin, the prime
suspect is a friend of Sara’s mother—and she expects Sara to prove the
woman’s innocence. A tall order, as the case isn’t officially hers and belongs
to a rival detective.
But a promise is
a promise, and Sara soon finds herself sleuthing undercover—and off the
clock—in a world of polyester shirts and rental shoes. It’s not all bad,
though, as she’s taking her friend and partner Sean McKinley along for the
ride. They are better together than they’ve ever been split, and they’re not
amateurs at finding killers.
Despite being up
against small-town hijinks and colorful characters who threaten to roll
their efforts into the gutter, they are having fun. That is, until they get
close to the killer and a dangerous twist puts their lives at risk.
Americano is available in e-book, paperback, and audiobook from popular
Gracie's marriage is going through a rough patch, and she takes her two daughters and returns to her family home. Only she doesn't really feel like she belongs there at all since her father died three years ago. Though truth be told, it hadn't felt like home long before that. What she has is a big house of hurtful memories and a stepmother still living there that she never wanted. But Gracie feels like this is the only place she can turn right now.
This book follows the journey of Gabbie's life in the present day and in the past. As secrets come out, she begins to question what she thought she knew. Is it possible that things weren't exactly as how she she had perceived as a young person? And maybe her stepmother isn't the evil person she made her out to be either?
As a mother herself now, how will what Gabbie learns from visiting her past shape her future and that of her daughters' and her marriage. There is no doubt that Gabbie has been placed in a tough spot, but will she find her way out? I dare not say any more for risk of giving any spoilers, but I highly recommend this book if you just want to step into someone else's world for a day.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. Lizzie's twin brother is traumatized and affected firsthand by the war just months before his fourteenth birthday. That time had stayed with him and by the time of his eighteenth birthday, he can't contemplate being conscripted for the military. He is terrified of dying and killing and runs away. What follows is quite a fast-paced journey told from the alternating perspectives of brother and sister.
In order to protect her brother from prison or death, she gets the idea to pretend she's her brother. She takes his place in helping the war efforts and ends up finding love in the most unlikely of places.
The end of the book was touching and satisfying. I highly recommend this book for those who just want to get swept away.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. I am loving the books in this series! They are World War 2 fiction and while they shed light on the atrocities that took place during this brutal time in history, they also show the resilience of the human spirit. While all the evil is happening, people are carrying on with their lives. After all, this is their one life to live. Will they live it to the full, working with what they have, or bow over in grief?
The Polish Wife is a love story amid the darkness of Nazi infiltration. Having fled to Poland to escape an abusive husband, Anna, not only takes up with the resistance but she finds a doctor with a gentle spirit who loves her. The book follows their lives with the brutal backdrop of war and political upheaval. There are losses, there are victories.
One thing that I absolutely love about these books is how immersive they are. The characters feel real, and I experience the gamut of emotion as I keep eagerly flipping the pages. I strongly recommend this book if you're looking for a book to pull you in and propel you to another time and place. This novel takes readers on a powerful, moving journey.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. I really enjoyed this one. Persephone recently turned the big 5-0 and finds herself divorced. This was a choice she made and doesn't regret but she feels the need to get away and assess her life and what it might look like from this point. She rents a cozy cottage by the ocean in Maine, intent on having a peaceful vacation. But it doesn't exactly turn out like that. Just upon entering the small town she faces road rage from a local. But she's still determined not to let that shake her. Then she finds out the piece of work lives next to her rental. Joy oh bliss.
The man is loud and obnoxious with a host of people who don't really like him but when he's murdered the locals are ready to point the finger at Persephone. She becomes the local sheriff's prime murder suspect. Instead of being able to enjoy her time away she finds herself trying to solve a murder so she doesn't go away for the crime.
I recommend this read for an afternoon's entertainment. It had good pacing, I connected with the main character, and it had a satisfying resolution.
(I realized after reading the book and writing this review that the author is also a Canadian like me!)
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. It moved along at a good pace and caught my attention from the start. The plot is led by Annabelle Shannon who is returning home to Ireland to visit her aging grandmother. The two share a close bond and Annabelle seriously considers uprooting her New York City fast-paced life in exchange for a more leisurely paced existence in a small village. But the people there aren't too accepting of strangers, and even though everyone knows and loves Annabelle's grandmother, they still look with suspicion on Annabelle.
When the two of them are invited to spend the night at a fancy hotel that is soon to open, things don't turn out exactly as planned. One of the other VIP guests turns up dead the next morning. Local police initially dismiss it as an old man's health taking a bad turn, but Annabelle is skeptical from the start. She pokes her nose into things, making "friends" with the local police, but eventually they start to see that she can offer them some insight. After all, they don't see murder in the village, and Annabelle is hardened from her life in the city and her work as a lawyer.
I recommend this book for those who are looking for an entertaining light read to devour in an afternoon.
Buy from Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. This was such an incredible, heart-rending, and yet enjoyable journey to take. I read this one in a day, barely able to put it down. It was told from the perspective of the present day and back in the 1950's. To the author's credit both were gripping and had me wanting to pick up the next segment of the story. I have read books where I have skimmed to get back to a particular person's point of view, but not with this one.
It all starts with a mystery when Claudia is called to a lawyer's office. Not sure if this is some kind of scam or a legitimate request she still goes if nothing more than to satisfy her curiosity. When she ends up getting a box addressed to her late grandmother with mysterious contents, Claudia's curiosity is even more piqued. She becomes to determined to unravel not only her grandmother's heritage but also to piece together her own place in the world. This was a lovely, beautiful story that I highly recommend.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. This isn't the novel for you if you have sensitivities to swearing. With that said given Noelle's background I can see that it is likely realistic. She comes from family of cops and grew up with three brothers. If that's not enough to drive a girl crazy her grandmother is constantly trying to set her up and marry her off.
What grandma doesn't know is Noelle spends a lot of the time trying to fight her attraction to a local detective. The tension is only made worst when two murders take place on Noelle's property and she ends up face to face with this detective on a daily basis. While she was first considered a suspect it soon becomes clear she might be the killer's next target. In that case, what's a private investigator to do? Well between trying to stay one step ahead of the killer, eat cupcakes of course!
I won't say anymore and risk spoiling the plot, but the author definitely had me flipping the pages.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD. Though I suppose most domestic thrillers do. Bridget and Charity married each other's husbands, yet still remained friends? Hard to believe and obviously not everything is as it seems. The writing is so atmospheric and immersive it's more like watching a movie than reading a book. The cover really takes on more meaning as you read the book too.
In this prequel to the Power Ascending series we get the origin story of Charlaine and Ludwig. He is the son of a baron while she's the daughter of a humble smith. The difference in their stations spells inevitable doom to a romantic relationship despite their feelings for each other. Bennett takes a pause from battle scenes for this love story, but it's not without tension and political angst. The author certainly makes you feel the emotions of the characters. The pacing moved along at a fast clip and the dialogue was smart and witty. Right from the start it felt like I was being swept along and by Eleanor's side as she boarded the luxury cruise ship.
The author did a great job of making all the characters distinct and memorable which can be a challenge when a bunch of names are given to the reader. I thought I'd give this novel a go even though I've never read a fantasy book in my life. But this one ticked off all the important boxes for what I look for in a book. Strong female leads and characters are a must. Well, we're talking about Sister Knights here. Yep, women who kick a**! It was hard to pick a favorite among them, but Paul certainly pulled me in right away with Charlaine.
Another thing I need in a book is character growth and that existed for several of them. The plot held my interest and kept me turning the pages. The shark certainly wasn't dead in this book! (Sharks need to constantly move or they die.)
And there was action, boy, was there action! If I was a nailbiter, I'd have nubs. And while I can't say where or how this book rates in the genre (with nothing to compare it to) I will be reading more in the Power Ascending series including the introduction story, TEMPERED STEEL. A great book is a great book, and this one certainly qualifies.
Buy on Amazon.
_____________________
<span face=""Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; text-align: justify;">
Read and reviewed by CAROLYN ARNOLD.
