Meeting Writing Team: @SFSwem and @DASwem

Tell us about you.

We hooked up in the Air Force around 1978 and got married in 1980. Two kids, 2 grands.
Steve: I have been reading books since I could get them open and make out the words. The "Tom Swift" series was my favorite childhood book.

Detra: I read now and again, not quite the avid reader until I met Steve and he handed me DragonFlight by Anne McCaffery. Now our walls are lined in places by book shelves. Mostly books some DVD's.

Steve: I started writing sometime in the 90's and even took a "Writing for Children" course but life interfered and we move to the Northwest.
We self published our first book "Return of the Guardian" early last year. A how is this done thing. It needs work so it was pulled before "Demesne Valley of Mystery was published in September of 2011. Which has ended up being book 2 of the series.
Our latest and we have been told best work is Demesne’ New Beginning (Book 3). The next one is in progress. Detra keeps sample of each book on our website voldamar.com more about us can be found there as well.

Tell us about your book.

Aithera Kilbray was assassinated at birth, but destiny has plans for her. With
the essence from two others, she lives. She is forced to flee her home at a tender age. A kindly couple takes her in, she grows and learns about her magical gifts and the miracle of her birth.
Book two will find Aithera assisting Devon to regain his strength. Jira will join them and vowes to help find and put the pieces of Devon's amulet back together. Book 3 Demesne' New Beginning, brings people back to the valley, Aithera is torn beween love and duty, Jira gets answers to her questions and uncovers some family secrets.

What inspired you to write this book?

We started to work out the story line years ago in an AOL chat room. You can have do overs there and if the dialog dosn't fit or work you can strike it. Kind of act out the sene before writing it. It was put on the back burner as life interfered again. Last year we saw an article and we decided to give the writing thing a try again and old stories we could still get to came back out for air. The Demesne story was one of them. It has grown more than we thought it would. People who read Valley asked "how did this happen? and What happened to Aithera when she was little." and it grows.

What can readers expect when they open your book?

We write in first person. Some say it pulls the reader in, some say it is difficult. No graphic discriptions of blood or sex. We tried to keep it family orientated.
There is magic all around. Fun, Entertaining are the words that best discribe. At least that is what we think.

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment as a writer?

Pull the reader in, and have them enjoy the journey as they read. If they can't put the book down then we have done our job. It is all about the story.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Oh that is a tough one.
Steve: Terry Brooks pulls you into the adventure make you one with the story.
Anne McCaffery just about does the same. I have so many.
Detra: Mercedes Lackey, I actuly feel like I am rideing with the Hearlds. I feel the pain when one is hurt. Many of her works do this. Anne is also one of my Favorites.

Do you have any suggestions for writers just starting out?

Steve: Write first, get your thoughts and the story out of your head and onto the paper or into the computer. Then go back and start smoothing things out, enhancing here and there. Get a good editor and have your computer read to you. It dosn't auto translate.

What is your favorite quote?

Steve: I live in reality and when reality is done for the day, it is time to get a way.
Detra: "Just because one does not process sensory information and replay it the same as everyone else, does not mean that there is a lack in comprehension or interest." Ashida Kim

If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?

Steve: Devon, he has had it rough but he has loved, lived and had powerful magic he uses spareingly.
Detra: Aithera, she is strong, helpful and kind. I kind of hope I am like that.

If your book was made into a movie which actor/actress would play which character(s)?

We have actuly talked about that. It is a hard call.
Devon would have to be a tall rustic type. - Hugh Jackman or Robert Emmanuel, both could pull off the aloof yet powerful personality that is Devon
Aithera would have to be willowy - Is hard. Not sure who to suggest here
Jira a strong personality - Allison Scagliotti, she has the fire to portray Jira's search for knowledge and to pull of her contant questioning personality.

Tell us 5 random things about you the person, not the author:

1) Loving, we tend to be wrapped up in each other.
2) Helpful, we take care of an elderly family member. And lend a hand when needed elsewhere.
3) Devoted, husband and wife team for 30+ years.
4) Hard working when needed, smarter working preferred
5) Easy going
